The legend Tieguanyin begins over 300 years ago in Anxi County, Fujian, where a humble farmer named Wei Yin faithfully cared for a neglected temple honoring Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Touched by his devotion, Guanyin appeared to him in a dream and led him to a hidden tea shoot beneath a cliff. The plant produced a tea of such exceptional quality that it was named Tieguanyin (Iron Goddess of Mercy), symbolizing both the tea’s dense, iron-like leaves and the goddess’s compassion.
The Zhang family grows the original, unblended Tieguanyin cultivar in a remote, high-mountain region of Anxi County, far from urban areas and modern pollutants. At over 1000 meters elevation, this pristine environment allows the tea to thrive naturally, resulting in leaves with a pure, clean character and a delicate wildflower aroma untouched by contamination.
